Diego Velázquez Self-portrait Painting
Famous artwork by Diego Velázquez
Diego Velazquez was born in Seville, Andalusia, Spain early on June 6, 1599. Diego Velázquez was one of the most important Spanish painters of the 17th century. When Velazquez was 12 years old, he studied under the accomplished Spanish painter, Francisco Pacheco, who taught him technical drawing and painting as well as literature and philosophy. The naturalistic form in which he was instructed to paint as an art student, is elegantly presented in portraits of live models and still life paintings which at times Velazquez placidly puts a self-portrait of himself in his own artwork, such as the famous painting of Las Meninas. In 1627, King Philip announced a competition for the most accomplished Spanish painters. Velázquez won the competition, however, his painting was destroyed by a fire in the palace. shortly after, Velázquez made his first visit to Italy in 1629 where he copied the master paintings and worked on his own canvases.
In 1649, Velázquez made a return visit to Rome where he painted his famous portrait of "Pope Innocent X" as well as a variety of other paintings.
This decorative self-portrait of Diego Velazquez is produced on museum quality fine art paper and represents his historical journey from Spain to Rome. Velázquez was one of the leading artists in the court of King Philip IV when he finally settled in Spain; in our current time, Velázquez is globally recognized as one of the world’s greatest artists ever.
